Southern Fuel Coupes demonstrates the meaning of true sportsmanship at every race. In the years I have been associated with the SFC members, I have to make this statement; This has to be the best bunch of racers I have ever been around. This is why. Last year at Ware Shoals, Mark Johnson exploded a rear end and there was no way that he could continue to race. In just a matter of minutes, a fellow racers, Todd Bauknecht, gives Mark a brand new rear end to get him back in the race. Todd did these things for everyone of the SFC racers all year long and received the Sportsman- ship award at the SFC 2000 Banquet. On numerous occasions, SFC members furnished each other with various parts to make sure they were able to race every round they could even though they could be helping the racer that would beat him in the next round. This type of help was done on and off the track all year long and made me see what these folks were made of. At the very first race of the 2001 season, it was demonstrated again and again. You would think that each racer had two goals in mind when they come to race, points and money. In the second round, two cars did their burnouts side by side. At the end of the burnt out, one of the cars had lost reverse and was unable to make it to the line. This should have been a sure win for the other car. Well, the entire crew of the car that was able to stage struck out down the track and help push the cripple car back to the line so he would have the chance to compete. By rights, it should have been an automatic win for the car that was able to stage but they waited for the other team to start, stage and race. There was another instance the same night the demonstrated this type of sportsmanship. Another car lost all of the Co2 that operates the shifter. His opponent furnished him with a full tank of Co2 just so he could make the round that proved to be the closes race of the night. Don Roddy had some severe handling problems and had made the statement that he was not gona run his car. Several members of one of the teams made some changes and Don was able to compete in all of the rounds. Bottom line; I have yet to find a SFC member that will not help someone in the group even though he stands a chance to get beat by the same person he helps. |
